The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is an organization that represents members of the civil engineering profession worldwide.
The ASCE was founded on November 5, 1852 when 12 engineers met at the Croton Aqueduct in New York. Together they decided to incorporate themselves under the name American Society of Civil Engineers & Architects. It is now the oldest engineering society in the United States.
As an organization, its responsibility is to facilitate the advancement of technology, encourage and provide tools for education, promote professionalism and the profession as a whole, as well as advocating infrastructure and environmental stewardship.
The ASCE publishes more 1,500 standards, manuals, committee reports, proceedings, and ASCE Press titles. It also produces journals with technical information for civil engineers. Its online archive contains over 28,000 articles published since 1990.
With headquarters in Reston, Virginia, the ASCE is governed by a board of directors and elected president. It represents more than 133,000 civil engineers throughout the world.
