[edit] History

[edit] Brock Forms Astec

Astec Industries was founded in 1972 by J. Don Brock, who was previously president of the asphalt division of CMI Corp. Brock was no stranger to the world of asphalt, having begun working at his father’s asphalt heating plant at a young age. He also holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering. He formed Astec Industries Inc. to build hot-mix asphalt plants.

In its first year, Astec had only five employees – a number that would jump to more than 3,000 by the year 2000.

In 1975, three years after the company’s creation, Brock became chairman of the board.

[edit] A Major Development and Continued Growth

In 1978, Astec Industries Inc., under the leadership of Brock, introduced one of its most noteworthy products: a self-erecting, portable asphalt mixing plant, named the Six Pack.[3]

The company has continued to expand over the years through developments and acquisitions. On July 31, 2007, Astec Industries Inc. acquired 100% of Peterson Inc., a manufacturer of environmental, wood, construction debris, and waste product processing equipment.[4] The acquisition cost Astec approximately $34 million, which includes $7 million to eliminate Peterson’s debt. After the acquisition, Peterson’s existing leaders – President Neil Peterson and CEO Larry Cumming – continued to manage the business.[5]

On October 1, 2008, Astec acquired Dillman Equipment Inc. A manufacturer of asphalt plant equipment that was incorporated in 1994, Dillman is based in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Dillman manufacturing plant remains in Prairie du Chien, as a division of Astec Industries Inc.[6]

[edit] The Company Today

Through its combined subsidiaries, Astec Industries Inc. holds 106 U.S. and 53 foreign patents. In addition, they have more than 40 patent applications pending.[7]

Founder J. Don Brock remains chairman and CEO of Astec Industries Inc., which is now comprised of 14 companies – 12 in the United States, one in Canada, and one in South Africa.

The group of companies now employs more than 3,000 people.
