Case Corp. has been in existence for over 150 years, and operates in many global construction markets. The company is marketed under CNH Global as a result of the merger between Case and New Holland, N.V.

This company caters to various industries, including general and residential construction, landscaping, utilities, material handling, and road and bridge building and repair. The company specializes in the sale, lease, and rental of construction equipment, catering to a global marketplace. Additionally, the company has a financing division by the name of Case Credit.

[edit] History

Case Corp. was founded in Racine, Wisconsin in 1842, by inventor Jerome Increase Case, for the manufacture of threshing machines. Eventually, the company became known worldwide as the first, and largest, maker of steam engines.[1]

By 1912, Case was well known in the construction equipment industry as a maker of roadbuilding equipment.[2] This period marked the beginning of its growth, as the company would expand through the acquisition of several businesses.

[edit] Acquisition of American Tractor Corp.

In 1957, Case purchased the small Indiana-based company known as American Tractor Corp. At the time, the small company was in the process of developing a hydraulic backhoe to attach to its crawlers. Coincidentally, Case was working on a development of its own: an industrial-wheel tractor that would accommodate a backhoe on the rear and a loader in the front. The acquisition of American Tractor came at an ideal time for the company; by the spring of 1957, Case merged the two developing technologies to introduce the first factory-integrated tractor loader backhoe: the Case 320.[3]

[edit] Case Credit

While Case was busy with acquisitions and new developments, 1957 also saw the creation of Case Credit, a division offering financial services to customers purchasing, leasing, and insuring equipment mainly in North America, Australia, and Europe. Case Credit would later become a division of CNH Capital.

[edit] Growth and Recognition

Case continued to gain recognition through the decades; in 1988, Fortune magazine listed Case loader backhoes among “100 Products America Makes Best." The year 1994 proved to be a significant year for Case, as the company made its first public offering, and unveiled its new brand identity. In addition, the company signed an agreement with Sumitomo Heavy Industries of Japan. With this agreement, Sumitomo began manufacturing excavators for North American buyers.

[edit] Case-New Holland Merger

Case experienced a rapid amount of growth in 1999. This growth arose from the company’s merger with construction and agricultural equipment manufacturer New Holland. The merger’s result was CNH Global, a heavyweight in the construction equipment industry. CNH Global became one of the world’s foremost marketers of various leading brands of heavy equipment.[4] Under this merger, Case Credit combined with New Holland Credit to become CNH Capital, creating a leader in the financing industry.[5]

[edit] New Equipment Developments

Case has been a frontrunner in the development and improvement of construction equipment since the invention of the tractor loader backhoe in 1957. A significant development for Case came about in 1998 when the company became the first manufacturer to include ride control on loader backhoes and skid steers.[6] Case’s developments were furthered in 2000 with new upgrades to preexisting equipment. The H Series crawler dozers’ exclusive PowerTurn system was introduced to provide maximum power to both of the dozer’s tracks when turning. The M Series loader backhoe’s Pro Control system was created in order to reduce the swing and hold the backhoe position with precision. In 2001, Case unveiled its first CX excavator, with onboard intelligence features to increase operator productivity.

[edit] The Company Today

Currently, more than 50 products bear the Case name. Case’s parent company, CNH Global, has 39 manufacturing locations and 26 research and development centers worldwide. In addition, the Case brand is sold by Case IH, an agricultural subsidiary of CNH Global. The company employs over 25,000 and has 11,000 distributors in 160 countries. Case Corp. is led by President and CEO Jim McCullough.
