The 112F has a DD330 turbocharged, four-cylinder engine producing 100 flywheel horsepower (FWHP).
The 112F was manufactured in the USA, with an 82F serial number prefix, and in Australia, with an 80J prefix.
The 82F has an oil clutch. The 80J has a direct drive transmission with an electric start.

In 1961 Caterpillar added self-adjusting brakes, beginning with 82F00267.
Production of 82F ended in 1964; it was replaced by a new unit, with a 46D prefix. The 46D comes standard with electric start, self-adjusting brakes, oil clutch, and direct drive.
In 1967 Cat introduced another new unit, with a 74H prefix. It has tandem drive.
Production of 46D and 74H ended in 1968; they were replaced by another new unit, with an 89J prefix. It has a D333 six-cylinder engine.
Caterpillar introduced the Australian unit in 1969. It has a D330 four-cylinder engine.
In 1971 a rollover protection system was added, beginning with 89J01571.
In 1973 a new cab was built and hydraulic side shift was made standard, beginning with 80J00396.
Production of 112F ended in 1974.
