The 120B has a 3306 six-cylinder engine producing 125 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It has an electric start.

The 120B was given a 64U serial number prefix.

In 1974 Caterpillar made hydrostatic steering standard, beginning with 64U01502.

In 1979 an electric service meter was added, beginning with 64U05351. A water separator was also added, beginning with 64U06116.

Production of 120B ended in 1983.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 7,500 Caterpillar 120B motor graders have been produced.
