The 140 has a D333 turbocharged, six-cylinder engine producing 150 flywheel horsepower (FWHP).
The 140 was manufactured in the USA, with a 11R or 14U serial number prefix; in Canada, with a 24R prefix; in Australia, with a 55F prefix; and in Brazil, with a 61S prefix. The 14U has a powershift transmission; all other units have direct drive.
The 11R comes standard with mechanical controls, an oil clutch, power boosted brakes and steering, a 12-foot (3.7 m) moldboard, and a six speed forward, two reverse transmission.
The 55F and 14U has an electric start and oil clutch.

In 1971 Caterpillar added a rollover protection system, beginning with 11R00610 and 14U00386.
In 1973 a hydraulic side shift and new cab was added, beginning with 55F00439.
Production ended in the USA and Canada in 1974
Production ended in Australia ended in 1975.
Production ended in Brazil in 1987.
Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 2,500 Caterpillar 140 motor graders have been produced.
