The 14E has a D333 turbocharged, six-cylinder engine producing 150 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It has a direct drive transmission with electric start. It comes standard with hydraulically actuated mechanical controls and strengthened front-end planetary blade lift.
The 14E was given a 99G serial number prefix.

In 1967 Caterpillar introduced a new 14E unit, with a 12K prefix. It comes standard with power boosted brakes and steering, and an oil clutch.
Production of 99G ended in 1968.
In 1969 another new unit began production, with a 72G prefix.
In 1970 Cat modified the multiple disc clutch control, beginning with 12K01457 and 72G00583.
In 1971 a rollover protection system was added, beginning with 72G00583.
Production of 14E ended in 1973; it was replaced by the Caterpillar 14G.
Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 5,100 Caterpillar 14E motor graders have been produced.
