The Caterpillar 16G motor grader was introduced in 1973 as a replacement for the Caterpillar 16. It was manufactured in the USA only.

The 16G has a 3406 turbocharged, six-cylinder engine producing 250 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with an articulated frame, full hydraulic sideshift and tilt, oil disc brakes, and a dual circuit air disc brake system. It is available with direct drive or powershift transmission.

The 16G was given a 93U serial number prefix.

In 1976 Caterpillar increased rimpull, beginning with 93U01039.

In 1977 an electric service meter and direct injection engine was added, beginning with 93U01179.

In 1981 an electronic monitoring system operator panel was added and a low profile cab was made standard, beginning with 93U01869.

In 1983 Cat added a single moldboard tip cylinder, and a bronze alloy drawbar and circle wear strips, beginning with 93U02340.

In 1985 a blade lift accumulator was added, beginning with 93U02501. Horsepower was increased to 275 FWHP, beginning with 93U02511.

In 1987 a 50-amp alternator and new load sensing hydraulics were installed and an electric system update was done, beginning with 93U02679.

In 1989 belted steps were added, beginning with 93U02981. Cat modified the suspension seat with dual shock, beginning with 93U02984.

In 1993 the electric horn was replaced with an air horn, beginning with 93U03456. The air conditioning refrigerant was changed to R-134A, beginning with 93U03516.

Caterpillar offered a certified rebuild program with this model.

Production of 16G ended in 1995; it was replaced by the Caterpillar 16H.
