The Caterpillar 205B hydraulic excavator was introduced in 1990 as the replacement for the Caterpillar 205. It was manufactured in Germany only.

The 205B has a Cat 3114 turbocharged engine producing 80 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with a load sensing hydraulic system, moving undercarriage, and a new single main pump. It also has increased lift capacity, digging depth, and reach, created by higher stick and bucket forces.

The 205B was given a 5ZF serial number prefix.

Production of 205B ended in 1992.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 70 Caterpillar 205B hydraulic excavators have been produced.
