The 206 comes standard with a variable flow hydraulic system and pilot operated controls.
The 206 was manufactured in Germany, with a 2RC or 3GC serial number prefix.
The 2RC has a Deutz F4L912 engine producing 67 flywheel horsepower (FWHP).
The 3GC has a Perkins 4.236 engine producing 71 FWHP.

In 1985 Caterpillar added overspeed protection in reverse, beginning with 2RC00126 and 3GC00196.
In 1986 adjustments were made to the cab and travel control, and individually controlled outriggers became optional, beginning with 2RC00294 and 3GC00196. Cat also added a new transmission rotating clutch housing, beginning with 3GC00210.
In 1987 a stronger boom nose and foreboom were added, beginning with 3GC00282.
Production of 206 ended in 1990; it was replaced by the Caterpillar 206B.
Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 1,000 Caterpillar 206 mobile excavators have been produced.
