The 214 comes standard with a variable flow hydraulic system and pilot operated controls.
The 214 was manufactured in Germany, with a 1KB or 9MB serial number prefix.
The 1KB has a Perkins 6.354.4P engine producing 102 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It has a shift inhibitor.
The 9MB has a Deutz F6L912 engine producing 101 FWHP.

In 1985 Caterpillar added a shift inhibitor to the 9MB unit, beginning with 9MB00056.
Production of 1KB ended in 1987; 9MB ended in 1988.
The 214 was replaced by the Caterpillar 214B.
Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 200 Caterpillar 214 mobile excavators have been produced.
