Caterpillar 215 Hydraulic Excavator

Originally the 215 was manufactured in Belgium only, with a 96L serial number prefix.
In 1997 horsepower was increased to 90 FWHP and a new cab design was introduced, beginning with 96L00787.
Production of 96L ended in 1980, but a number of new units followed between 1980 and 1983.
The new 215 has a Cat 3204 direct injection, turbocharged (DIT) engine producing 90 FWHP. It was manufactured in Belgium, with a 57Y or 95Z prefix, and in the USA, with a 14Z or 61Z prefix.
The 95Z has a 3304 DIT engine. The 57Y unit has an improved cab and an optional high ambient temperature cooling system. The 61Z unit has a pedestal mount on its upper structure only.
In 1981 and 1982 Cat added a D4-size track link, larger track bolts, and forged carrier rollers, beginning with 57Y00652 and 14Z00432.
In 1983 the entire undercarriage became D4-sized, beginning with 57Y02031 and 14Z00762. Cat also modified the scroll metering fuel system, beginning with 57Y02035 and 14Z00649.
Production of 57Y and 61Z ended in 1983; 95Z and 14Z ended in 1984.
The 215 was replaced by the Caterpillar 215B.
Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 7,800 Caterpillar 215 hydraulic excavators have been produced.
