The 224 comes standard with a variable flow hydraulic system and pilot operated controls.
The 224 was manufactured in Germany, with a 2JC or 5TC serial number prefix.
The 5TC has a Perkins T6.354.4 engine producing 124 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It has a shift inhibitor.
The 2JC has a Deutz BF6L913 engine producing 143 FWHP.

In 1985 Caterpillar added a shift inhibitor to the 2JC unit, beginning with 2JC00020.
Production of 224 ended in 1989; it was replaced by the Caterpillar 224B.
Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 70 Caterpillar 224 mobile excavators have been produced.
