The 226 has a 3034 naturally aspirated, four-cylinder engine producing 54 net horsepower (HP). It comes standard with a radial lift path and a hydraulic pump that delivers fluid at a rate of 15.1 gallons (57.2 L) per minute (GPM) at a system pressure of 3,300 pounds per square inch (PSI) (22,737 kPa).
The 226 was given a 5FZ serial number prefix.
Production of 226 ended in 2004; it was replaced by the Caterpillar 226B.
Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 10,100 Caterpillar 226 skid steer loaders have been produced.
