The Caterpillar 229D hydraulic excavator was introduced in 1989 as the replacement for the Caterpillar 229. It was manufactured in Belgium only.

The 229D has a Cat 3304 engine producing 157 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with larger counterweight, fuel tank, and buckets, increased implement and travel pressure, and redesigned upper frame, boom, and sticks.

The 229D was given a 2LJ serial number prefix.

Production of 229D ended in 1991.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 600 Caterpillar 229D hydraulic excavators have been produced.
