The Caterpillar 229 hydraulic excavator was introduced in 1986. It was manufactured in the USA only.

The 229 has a Cat 3028 engine producing 145 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with a variable flow hydraulic system, pilot-operated controls, and counterweight.

The 229 was given a 1GF serial number prefix.

In 1986 Caterpillar added a sound suppressed cab, beginning with 1GF00320. Cat also added larger boom cylinders, reinforced the boom and stick, raised horsepower to 180 FWHP, and increased travel, implement, and heavy-lift pressure, beginning with 1GF00356.

In 1988 a better sealing for the travel pilot valve was added, beginning with 1GF00492. The hydraulic horsepower was increased, beginning with 1GF00496

Production of 229 ended in 1989; it was replaced by the Caterpillar 229D.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 600 Caterpillar 229 hydraulic excavators have been produced.
