The 246 has a 3034 turbocharged, four-cylinder engine producing 74 net horsepower (HP). It comes standard with a radial lift path and a hydraulic pump that delivers fluid at a rate of 22 gallons (83.4 L) per minute at a system pressure of 3,300 pounds per square inch (PSI) (22,737 kPa).
The 246 was given a 5SZ serial number prefix.
Production of 246 ended in 2004; it was replaced by the Caterpillar 246B.
Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 7,000 Caterpillar 246 skid steer loaders have been produced.
