The Caterpillar 311B hydraulic excavator was introduced in 1996 in Japan. Production began in Indonesia a year later. It replaced the Caterpillar 311.

The 311B has a 3064 turbocharged, diesel engine producing 79 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with a power and work mode selector including a new user mode, high level of operator comfort, integrated seat and console, increased stick and bucket force, modified controllability, and modified serviceability from the ground.

The 311B was manufactured in Japan, with a 2LS, 2MS, 8GE, or 8HR serial number prefix; and in Indonesia, with a 9MR prefix.

The 2LS and 2MS units are equipped with a blade.

Production of 8GR ended in 2001.
