The Caterpillar 311 hydraulic excavator was introduced in 1992 in Japan. Production began in Indonesia in 1994.

The 311 has a Cat 3064 turbocharged, diesel engine producing 79 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with a variable flow hydraulic system with power and work mode selector, pilot activated control, horsepower summation control, modified X-shaped carbody, large cross section design for the boom and stick, high level of operator comfort, increased stick and bucket force, and increased pressure in the travel circuit.

The 311 was manufactured in Japan, with a 5PK or 9LJ serial number prefix; and in Indonesia, with a 2KM prefix.

The 9LJ unit also has a modified cab.

Production of 311 ended in 1996; it was replaced by Caterpillar 311B.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 3,700 Caterpillar 311 hydraulic excavators have been produced.
