The Caterpillar 317 hydraulic excavator was introduced in 1995 in France. Production began in Belgium in 1996.

The 317 has a Cat 3054 turbocharged engine producing 99 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with a variable flow hydraulic system with a work and power mode selector, pilot operated control system, horsepower summation control, high stick and bucket force, and a modified X-shaped carbody.

The 317 was manufactured in France, with a 2MM serial number prefix; and in Belgium, with a 9SR prefix.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 1,200 Caterpillar 317 hydraulic excavators have been produced.
