The 318C has a Cat 3066 turbocharged, diesel engine producing 125 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with pilot operated hydraulic controls.
The 318C was manufactured in Japan, with a CWP, GPA, or MDY serial number prefix; and in France, with a BTG, DAH, or FAA prefix.
Japanese units come standard with a long undercarriage, grease-lubricated tracks, a swing out hydraulic oil cooler, increased pump flow, modified cab design, and modified electronics. It is available with an optional straight travel pedal. The GPA unit has a long and narrow undercarriage.
French units come standard with a variable flow hydraulic system with a power and work mode selector, horsepower summation control, large lifting capacity, a high level of operator comfort, large cross-section design for the boom and stick, a modified X-shaped carbody, increased stick and bucket force, and increased pressure in the travel circuit. The DAH unit has a long undercarriage.
Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 400 Caterpillar 318C hydraulic excavators have been produced.
