The 320B has two different engine configurations: a Cat 3116 or 3066. Both are turbocharged, diesel engines producing 128 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with a high level of operator comfort and increased stick and bucket force.
The 320B was manufactured in Japan, with a 1CS, 3MR, 4FS, 4MR, 4NR, 5BR, 5CS, 6CR, 6LS, 9JS, or 9KR prefix; in Belgium, with a 1XS, 2AS, 3YZ, 5MS, or 7JR prefix; in France, with a 9WS prefix; in China, with a 8ES or 9CS prefix; and in Brazil, with a 4XW or 5GW prefix.
The 1XS, 2AS, 7JR, 4XW, 5GW, 8ES, 9CS, 9WS, 3MR, 4MR, 5BR, and 6CR units come standard with a Rexroth pump, power and work mode selector including a new user mode, an integrated seat and console, air conditioner, modified controllability, and modified serviceability from the ground. The 3MR and 4MR units have a SP10K pump instead of the Rexroth model.
The 5MS, 1CS, 4FS, 4NR, 5CS, 6LS, and 9JS units come standard with a variable flow hydraulic system with a power and work mode selector, pilot activated control, horsepower summation control, large lifting capacity, large cross-section design for the boom and stick, in-line mounted pumps, a modified X-shaped carbody, and increased pressure in the travel circuit.
The 2AS, 7JR, 4MR, 5CS, and 6CR units have a long undercarriage.
The 5MS unit has a short undercarriage.
The 1CS, 6LS, and 9JS units have a heavy-duty frame.
The Chinese and Brazilian units all have a wide cab.

Production of 2AS ended in 1998.
In 1998 Caterpillar added stick regeneration and a higher capacity air conditioner to two Japanese units, beginning with 5BR01639 and 6CR02902.
Production of 1CS, 4FS, and 4MR ended in 1999; 3MR, 4NR, 5BR, 6CR, 6LS, and 9JS ended in 2000; 1XS, 4XW, 9CS, 9WS, and 9KR ended in 2001; 5MS ended in 2002; 7JR ended in 2003; 8ES ended in 2005.
Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 25,500 Caterpillar 320B hydraulic excavators have been produced.
