The 322 has a Cat 3116 turbocharged, diesel engine producing 153 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with a variable flow hydraulic system with a power and work mode selector, pilot activated control, horsepower summation control, a high level of operator comfort, large cross section design for the boom and stick, a modified cab and X-shaped carbody, increased stick and bucket force, and increase pressure in the travel circuit.
The 322 was manufactured in Japan with a 7WL, 8CL, or 9RL serial number prefix; and in Belgium, with a 4RM, 8ML, or 9JL prefix.
The 4RM, 8ML, 8CL, and 9RL units have a long undercarriage. The 4RM and 9JL units have a narrow track gauge.
Production of 9JL ended in 1994.
Production of 322 ended in 1996; it was replaced by the Caterpillar 322B.
Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 3,000 Caterpillar 322 hydraulic excavators have been produced.
