The Caterpillar 325B hydraulic excavator was introduced in 1995 in Japan. Production began in the USA, Belgium, and China a year later.

The 325B has a Cat 3116 turbocharged, after-cooled, diesel engine with an air intake heater producing 168 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with a Rexroth pump, a power and work mode selector with a new user mode, a high level of operator comfort, integrated seat and console, an air conditioner, modified controllability, modified serviceability from the ground, increased stick and bucket force, and increased travel speed.

The 325B was manufactured in Japan, with a 1GS, 7EN, 8GM, 8PR, or 8RR serial number prefix; in the USA, with a 2JR prefix; in Belgium, with a 4DS, 5BS, 6DN, or 8FN prefix; and in China, with a 5LW or ABD prefix.

The 4DS, 5BS, and 1GS units have a heavy-duty upper frame. The 5BS also has a high and wide carbody.

The 4DS, 5BS, 6DN, 8FN, 5LW, 1GS, 7EN, 8RR, and 2JR units have a long undercarriage. The 8FN also has a narrow track gauge.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 8,600 Caterpillar 325B hydraulic excavators have been produced.
