The Caterpillar 330B hydraulic excavator was introduced in 1995 in Japan. Production began in the USA and Belgium in 1996, and China in 1999. It replaced the Caterpillar 330.

The 330B has a Cat 3306 turbocharged, after-cooled, diesel engine producing 222 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with a power and work mode selector with a new user mode, Rexroth pump, high level of operator comfort, integrated seat and console, air conditioner, increased stick and bucket force, modified controllability, and modified serviceability from the ground.

The 330B was manufactured in Japan, with an 8SR, 9HN, 1JS, 2RR, or 8TR serial number prefix; in the USA, with a 6DR prefix; in Belgium, with a 5LS, 3YR, 4RS, or 5LR prefix; and in China, with a 4YW or 3ZZ prefix.

The 5LS, 3YR, 4RS, 1JS, and 6DR units have a heavy-duty upper frame. The 5LS and 4RS units have an air intake heater. The 5LS unit has increased travel speed.

The 5LS, 3YR, 4RS, 5LR, 1JS, 2RR, 8TR, and 6DR units have a long undercarriage.

Production ended in China in 2002.
