The Caterpillar 416C loader backhoe was introduced in 1996 in the USA and England as the replacement for the Caterpillar 416B.

The 416C has a 3054 engine producing 79 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with a center-pivot and two-wheel steering. It is available with parallel-lift or single-tilt.

The 416C was manufactured in the USA, with a 1WR or 4ZN serial number prefix, and in England, with a 1XR or 5YN prefix.

The 1WR and 1XR units have parallel-lift; 4ZN and 5YN have single-tilt.

Throughout its history, the Cat 416C has undergone a multitude of modifications.

In 1996 Caterpillar added an extendable stick with larger inserts for easier adjustment, beginning with 1WR00361, 4ZN00715, 1XR00390, and 5YN00599.

In 1997 cab door rust modifications were made, beginning with 1WR00728, 4ZN02118, 1XR00477, and 5YN01917. Valve/stem modifications were made to reduce wing drift, beginning with 1WR00880, 4ZN02454, 1XR00486, and 5YN02627. Cat added easier-to-operate cab door latches, beginning with 1WR01181, 4ZN03889, and 5YN02938. Cat modified IT quick coupler lines routing, beginning with 1WR01215 and 1XR00484. A new oil fill adaptor for the engine valve cover was added, beginning with 1WR01461, 4ZN04026, 1XR00505, and 5YN03254.

In 1998 Caterpillar added a radiator with tilt-away oil cooler, modified the torque limiter, and made powershift transmission available, beginning with 1WR02947, 4ZN05635, 1XR00684, and 5YN03800. An emissions certified engine was added, beginning with 1WR03366, 4ZN06417, 1XR00687, and 5YN04474. Cat added an air suspension seat, beginning with 1WR03807, 4ZN07105, 1XR00690, and 5YN05825.

In 1999, Caterpillar added ride control, a heavy lift boom cylinder and a pivot on the front axle, beginning with 1WR08116 and 4ZN16044. A windshield washer was standardized on all center-pivot machines, beginning with 1WR09762 and 4ZN20645. A dual split signal network was added, beginning with 1WR10494 and 4ZN22688.

Production of 1WR ended in 2000.

The Caterpillar 416C was replaced by the Caterpillar 416D.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 44,000 Caterpillar 416C loader backhoes have been produced.
