The Caterpillar 420E loader backhoe was introduced in 2006 as a replacement for the Caterpillar 420D. It was manufactured in the USA only.

The 420E has a Cat 3054C emissions engine producing 90 horsepower (HP). It comes standard with a 14-foot (4.3-m) center-pivot with high rotation linkage, and pilot hoe and loader controls.

The 420E is available as a single tilt front unit, with an HLS serial number prefix, or as an integrated tool carrier with a parallel lift link, with a KMW prefix.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 1,300 Caterpillar 420E loader backhoes have been produced.
