The Caterpillar 436C loader backhoe was introduced in 1996 in the USA and England as the replacement for the Caterpillar 436B.

The 436C has a 3054 engine producing 84 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with a center pivot. It is available with single-tilt or parallel lift, and all-wheel or two-wheel steering.

Single-tilt, all-wheel steer units were manufactured in England, with a 1GR serial number prefix, and in the USA, with a 1FR prefix.

Single-tilt, two-wheel steer units were manufactured in England, with a 9JN prefix, and in the USA, with an 8TN prefix.

Parallel lift, all-wheel steer units were manufactured in England, with a 1RR prefix, and in the USA, with a 1PR prefix.

Parallel lift, two-wheel steer units were manufactured in England, with a 2BR prefix, and in the USA, with a 2AR prefix.

Throughout its history, the Cat 436C has undergone a multitude of modifications.

In 1996 all USA units received an extendable stick with larger inserts for easier adjustments, beginning with 1FR00217, 1PR00298, 2AR00211, and 8TN00214.

In 1997 Caterpillar made cab door rust modifications, beginning with 1GR00217, 1RR00298, 2BR00212, 9JN00185, 1FR00220, 1PR0311, 2AR00225, and 8TN00293. Cat modified IT quick coupler lines routing, beginning with 1RR00301, 2BR00212, 1PR00312, and 2AR00235. Valve/stem modifications were made to reduce swing drift, beginning with 1RR00303, 2BR00211, 1FR00222, 1PR00311, 2AR00229, and 8TN00307. New cab door latches were added, beginning with 1FR00223, 1PR00312, 2AR00235, and 8TN00374. Cat added a new oil fill adaptor for the engine valve cover, beginning with 1FR00223, 1PR00313, 2AR00244, and 8TN00380.

In 1998 powershift transmission became available, a radiator with tilt away oil cooler was added, and modifications were made to the torque limiter, beginning with 1GR00416, 1RR00498, 9JN00384, 9JN00384, 1FR00416, 1PR00598, 2AR00604, and 8TN00391. An emission certified engine was added, beginning with 1GR00416, 1RR00498, 2BR00411, 9JN00984, 1FR00418, 1PR00604, 2AR00614, and 8TN00460. An air suspension seat was added, beginning with 1FR00422, 1PR00610, and 2AR00629.

In 1999 Cat added ride control, heavy lift boom cycle, pivot on the front axle, and increased horsepower to 93 FWHP, beginning with 1FR01416, 1PR01599, and 8TN00925. A windshield washer became standard on all centerpivot machines, beginning with 1FR01416, 1PR01810, 2AR01851, and 8TN01226.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 6,500 Caterpillar 436C loader backhoes have been produced.
