Caterpillar 438C Loader Backhoe
The 438C has a 3054 engine producing 85 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with side-shift. It is available with single-tilt or parallel lift, and all-wheel or two-wheel steering.
Single-tilt, all-wheel steer units were given a 1JR serial number prefix.
Single-tilt, two-wheel steer units were given a 9KN prefix.
Parallel lift, all-wheel steer units were given a 1TR prefix
Parallel lift, two-wheel steer units were given a 2DR prefix.
Throughout its history, the Cat 438C has undergone a multitude of modifications.
In 1996 Caterpillar added an extendable stick with larger inserts for easier adjustment, beginning with 1JR00407, 1TR00518, 2DR00600, and 9KN00358.
In 1997 cab door rust improvements were made, beginning with 1JR00408, 2DR00707, and 9KN00368. Modifications were made to IT quick coupler lines routing, beginning with 1TR00643 and 2DR00775. Valve/stem modifications were made to reduce wing drift, beginning with 1JR00410, 1TR00667, 2DR00782, and 9KN00369. Easier-to-operate cab door latches were added, beginning with 1JR00412, 1TR00706, and 2DR00824. A new oil fill adaptor for the engine valve cover was added, beginning with 1TR00725, 2DR00839, and 9KN00371.
In 1998 Cat added a radiator with tilt away oil cooler, modified the torque limiter, and made powershift transmission available, beginning with 1JR00607, 1TR00784, 2DR01053, and 9KN00561. An air suspension seat was also added, beginning with 1JR00611, 1TR00922, 2DR01196, and 9KN00567.
