The Caterpillar 515 skidder was introduced in 1996. It was manufactured in the USA only.

The 515 has a 3304 direct injection, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine producing 140 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with a four-speed transmission, differential locks, internal disc brakes and final drives, front axle oscillation, 138-inch (350.5-cm) wheelbase, and a modified cab.

The 515 was given a 4LR serial number prefix.

In 1997 Caterpillar made an emissions update to the engine, beginning with 4LR00469.

In 1998 a five-speed transmission replaced the four-speed transmission, beginning with 4LR00680.

In 1999 Cat added a C-500 series winch, beginning with 4LR00688.

In 2001 an air suspension seat was added, beginning with 4LR00723.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 700 Caterpillar 508 skidders have been produced.
