The 815 has a D333 turbocharged engine producing 170 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with electric start, articulated steering, and four-wheel drive.
The 815 was manufactured in the USA with a 91P serial number prefix; and in Belgium, with a 15R prefix.

In 1971 Caterpillar added a Type 8 torque converter standard, beginning with 91P00268 and 15R00144.
In 1972 a rollover protection system was added to the American unit, beginning with 91P00462.
In 1974 Cat added a sleeve metering fuel system, beginning with 91P00753.
In 1975 and 1976 flow amplified steering was added, beginning with 91P01134.
Caterpillar offered a certified rebuild program with this model. Units beginning with the following serial number run were certified rebuilds: 91P75000 and 15R75000.
Production ended in the USA in 1981, and Belgium in 1982.
The 815 was replaced by the Caterpillar 815B.
Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 3,200 Caterpillar 815 compactors have been produced.
