Caterpillar 922A/922B Wheel Loader
The 922A was manufactured in the USA, with a 59A or 63A serial number prefix. The 63A series was powered by a gasoline engine.
In 1962, Caterpillar replaced the 922A with the 922B wheel loader, which consisted of modified 59A and 63A units. With the 922B, Cat increased the lift capacity and the wheelbase, as well as providing greater axle oscillation, beginning with 59A02084 and 63A00474. The wheelbase was increased to 86 inches (218 cm).
Production of 59A and 63A ended in 1965. That same year Caterpillar introduced a new 922B unit, with a 94A prefix. It has a D330 engine.
The D330-powered 922B was also produced in Japan as the 97A series.
In 1968, another new unit began production, with an 88J prefix. It has a D330C engine. The Japanese built equivalent being the 74J series.
Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 8,100 Caterpillar 922A and 922B wheel loaders have been produced.
