The 931 has a 3204 four-cylinder engine producing 62 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It has a powershift transmission. It comes standard with pedal steer, electric start, and a sealed loader linkage.

It is available in two configurations: the standard model has a track gauge of 56 inches (142 cm); the Low Ground Pressure (LGP) configuration has a 65-inch (165-cm) track gauge.
Standard configuration crawler loaders have a 78U or 81U serial number prefix. The 81U unit has an extreme service undercarriage.
LGP configuration crawler loaders have a 08N or 10N prefix. The 08N unit has an extreme service undercarriage.

Production of 08N ended in 1977.
In 1977 Caterpilar added direct injection and sealed and lubricated tracks (SALT), beginning with 10N00526, 78U03914, and 81U00931.
Production of 931 ended in 1979; it was replaced by the Caterpillar 931B.
Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 6,600 Caterpillar 931 crawler loaders have been produced.
