The 938F has a 3116 direct injection turbo engine producing 140 flywheel horsepower. It comes standard with electronic autoshift transmission with automatic or manual shifting, a trans neutralizer lockout switch, quick gear kickdown button, load-sensing steering, and a modular monitoring system with electronic analog gauges. The 9389F meets all 1997 regulatory requirements.
It is available with a traction control system and automatic ride control.
The 938F was manufactured in USA, with a 1KM serial number prefix; in Japan, with an 8SM prefix; and in Belgium, with a 2RM prefix.

In 1996, Caterpillar introduced a new unit in Japan, with a 7SN prefix. It has a powershift countershaft transmission.
Production ended in the USA and Belgium in 1997.
Production of 8SM ended in 1998.
The Caterpillar 938F was replaced by the Caterpillar 938G.
Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 5,500 Caterpillar 938F wheel loaders have been produced.
