The 938G has a 3126 engine producing 145 horsepower (HP). It has an automatic powershift transmission with increased torque rise and fuel tank capacity. It comes standard with a G-series cab and increased lift capacity with nine combo general-purpose buckets and one penetration bucket.
The 938G was manufactured in the USA, with a 4YS or 8RS serial number prefix; in Belgium, with a 6WS prefix; and in Brazil, with a 9HS prefix.
The Belgian and Brazilian units have countershaft transmission, improved multiple row module, separate cooling system and a 3.25 yard (2.96 m) bucket.

In 2000, Caterpillar added new transmission input gears for increased runout speeds, a transmission cooler bypass valve, standard six-row radiator, LED dash warning lights and LED tail lights. It also made alterations to the fuel injector and turbo, and increased the net flywheel horsepower (FWHP), beginning with 4YS01878 and 6WS02579.
Production ended in Brazil in 2004 and Belgium in 2005.
The Caterpillar 938G was replaced by the Caterpillar 938G II.
Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 7,300 Caterpillar 938G wheel loaders have been produced.
