The Caterpillar 950B wheel loader was introduced in 1981 in the USA, Japan, and Belgium as the replacement for the Caterpillar 950.

The 950B has a 3304 direct injection turbo, four-cylinder engine producing 155 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with powershift transmission and a sealed Z-Bar linkage.

The 950B was manufactured in the USA, with a 22Z prefix; in Japan, with a 65R prefix; and in Belgium, with a 63R prefix.

The 22Z has a rollover protection system.

The 65R and 63R are articulated vehicles with four speeds forward, four reverse, and flow amplified steering.

In 1985, Caterpillar added a cast lift arm crosstube to the 22Z unit, beginning with 22Z01839.

In 1986 and 1987, a folded core radiator was added, beginning with 22Z02190, 65R02824, and 63R05617.

In 1987, Caterpillar replaced 950B with 950E, which consisted of modified 63R, 65R, and 22Z units. With the 950E, Cat added 613 transfer gears, a four-cubic yard (3-m3) bucket, new tires, and increased horsepower to 160 FWHP.

Production of 950B and 950E ended in 1990.

The Caterpillar 950E was replaced by the Caterpillar 950F.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 13,100 Caterpillar 950B and 950E wheel loaders have been produced.
