The 953C has a 3116 direct injection turbocharged, six-cylinder engine producing 121 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It has a hydrostatic transmission. It comes standard with electronic hydrostatic control, a computerized monitoring system, separate variable displacement pumps and motors, sealed and lubricated tracks, an oscillating undercarriage, new cab, Z-bar linkage, and a 71-inch (180-cm) track gauge.
The 953C was given a 2ZN serial number prefix.

In 1998 Caterpillar added pilot hydraulic controls and new sheet metal styling, beginning with 2ZN01750.
Production of 2ZN ended in 2003; it was replaced by a new unit, with a BBX prefix.
The BBX unit has a 3126B hydraulic/electric unit injector engine with air-to-air aftercooling producing 128 FWHP.
In 2005 Cat added a demand fan, beginning with BBX02000.
Production of 953C ended in 2005.
Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 8,400 Caterpillar 953C crawler loaders have been produced.
