The Caterpillar 955K crawler loader was introduced in 1966 in the USA and France. Production began in Japan a year later, and in Australia in 1969.

The 955K has a D330 turbocharged, four-cylinder engine producing 115 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It has a three-speed powershift transmission. It comes standard with pedal steer and an electric start.

The 955K was manufactured in the USA, with a 61H or 85J serial number prefix; in France, with a 48H or 64J prefix; in Japan, with a 31J or 71J prefix; and in Australia, with a 57J prefix.

The 71J unit has a 60-inch (152-cm) track gauge.

Production of 48H and 61H ended in 1968.

In 1969 and 1971 Caterpillar added course pitch final drive gears, beginning with 64J03086, 71J00614, and 85J01796.

In 1970 and 1971 a sealed loader linkage was added, beginning with 64J03785, 71J02178, and 85J03651.

In 1971 and 1972 Cat replaced 955K with 955L, but retained the 955K serial number prefixes. The 955L features increased horsepower to 130 FWHP, beginning with 64J03994, 71J03198, and 85J04672.

In 1971 Cat added a rollover protection system to the American unit, beginning with 85J06347.

Production ended in Australia in 1972.

Between 1973 and 1975 a new sleeve metering fuel system was added, beginning with 64J07349, 71J05357, and 85J07634.

In 1976 Cat modified the undercarriage, beginning with 71J05832 and 85J10129. Rollover protection system adaptability was added to the Japanese unit, beginning with 71J06102.

In 1977 a sealed and lubricated track was added, beginning with 64J09258, 71J06181, and 85J10970. An interim scroll fuel system was added to the Japanese unit, beginning with 71J06118.

Production of 85J ended in 1977.

Production of 64J, 31J, and 71J ended in 1978.

In 1977 and 1978 Caterpillar introduced a new set of 955L units. They were manufactured in the USA, with a 13X prefix; in France, with a 08Y prefix; and in Japan, with a 57M prefix.

The new 955L has a 3304 four-cylinder engine producing 130 FWHP. It has a powershift transmission. It comes standard with suspended pedal steering, sealed and lubricated tracks, rollover protection system, sound suppressed cab, and an electric hour meter.

The 57M unit has a 68-in track (173-cm) gauge.

Production ended in the USA and Japan in 1981.

Production ended in France in 1982.
