Caterpillar 966D/966E Wheel Loader
The 966D has a 3306 direct injection turbo, six-cylinder engine producing 200 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It has a four speeds forward, four reverse powershift transmission. It comes standard with articulated flow amplified steering, a sealed Z-Bar loader linkage, and electronic monitoring system.
The 966D was manufactured in the USA, with a 99Y serial number prefix; in Japan, with a 35S prefix; and in Belgium, with a 94X prefix.
The American unit has a rollover protection system.
In 1986 Caterpillar added a cast lift arm crosstube to the American unit, beginning with 99Y03806.
In 1986 Cat added a folded core radiator, beginning with 99Y04215, 35S02075, and 94X04689. I
In 1987 Caterpillar replaced 966D with 966E, which consisted of modified 99Y, 35S, and 94X units, beginning with 99Y05315, 35S02523, and 94X06489. With the 966E, Cat added a 615 torque converter impeller, a five-cubic yard (3.8-m3) bucket, new tires, and increased horsepower to 216 FWHP.
The Caterpillar 966E was replaced by the Caterpillar 966F.
