Caterpillar 980C Wheel Loader
The 980C has a 3406 direct injection turbo, six-cylinder engine producing 270 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with four-wheel oil disk brakes, a sealed loader linkage, auto bucket control, and powershift transmission.
The 980C was manufactured in the USA, with a 63X serial number prefix; in Japan, with a 13B prefix; and in Belgium, with a 2XD prefix.
The 63X has a rollover protection system (ROPS) and a sound-suppressed cab.
In 1984 Caterpillar added a new lift cylinder to increase digging depth, beginning with 63X05188.
In 1984 and 1985 a folded core radiator was added, beginning with 63X05447 and 13B00532.
In 1986 Cat added corporate ROPS, corporate wiring, a three-piece counterweight, as well as a starting and charging system analyzer, beginning with 63X06575.
Caterpillar offered a certified rebuild program with this model. Units beginning with the following serial number run were certified rebuilds: 63X75000 and 13B75000.
The Caterpillar 980C was replaced by the Caterpillar 980F.
