The Caterpillar 980G wheel loader was introduced in 1995 in Japan as the replacement for the Caterpillar 980F II. Production began in the USA and Belgium a year later.

[edit] Features

The 980G has a 3406C jacket water after-cooled (JWAC) engine. It comes standard with electro-hydraulic fingertip controls (FTC), command control steering with integrated transmission controls, a G-series cab, increased torque rise, and standard dump clearance, as well as three combo GP buckets and three combo rock buckets.

The 980G was manufactured in the USA, with a 2KR serial number prefix; in Japan, with a 2SR prefix; and in Belgium, with a 9CM prefix.

The 2KR also has increased visibility and fuel tank capacity, a tilting hood, and ground level access to major service points.

The Caterpillar 980G was replaced by the Caterpillar 980G II.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 7,400 Caterpillar 980G wheel loaders have been produced.
