The Caterpillar D3 crawler tractor was introduced in 1973. It was manufactured in Japan only.

The D3 has a 3204 four-cylinder engine producing 62 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with electric start and powershift transmission.

It is available in two configurations: the standard model has a track gauge of 56 inches (142 cm); the Low Ground Pressure (LGP) configuration tractor has a 65-inch (165-cm) track gauge. Both are available with or without extreme service undercarriage (ESU).

Standard configuration tractors with ESU have an 82U serial number prefix; those without ESU have a 79U prefix.

LGP configuration tractors with ESU have an 83U prefix; those without ESU have a 06N prefix.

Between 1975 and 1978, Caterpillar added a direct injection engine and sealed and lubricated tracks (SALT), beginning with 06N00886, 83U00778, and 79U04709.

Production of 82U ended in 1978; 06N, 83U, and 79U ended in 1979.

In 1985, Cat introduced a new D3 unit, with a 5MC prefix. It is an LGP model with five speeds forward, four reverse transmission, producing 65 FWHP.

In 1987, the 5MC unit received improved wear life undercarriage, beginning with 5MC00299.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 8,400 Caterpillar D3 crawler tractors have been produced.
