The Caterpillar D6R crawler tractor was introduced in 1996 as the replacement for the D6H.

The D6R has a 3306 direct injection turbo, six-cylinder engine with a powershift transmission. It comes standard with auto-kickdown, touch shift buttons, an advanced modular cooling system (AMOCS) radiator, new operator station and styling, a Caterpillar monitoring system and ecology drains.

It is available in two configurations: the standard model has a track gauge of 74 inches, the same as its predecessor; the Low Ground Pressure (LGP) configuration has an 88 inch track gauge. However, the standard configuration is available with three different lengths of track; the standard length is 8.6 feet, the XR length is 9 ft. and the XL length is 9.3 feet. Both configurations are available with either touch control or differential steering.

Standard configuration, standard length track tractors with differential steering were manufactured in the USA, with a 3ZN serial number prefix, in Japan with a 5PR prefix, in France, with a 4FM prefix, and in Brazil, with a 9ZS or 1RW prefix. Standard configuration, standard length tractors with touch control steering were manufactured in the USA, with a 2YN prefix, in Japan, with a 6FR prefix, and in France, with a 2HM prefix.

Standard configuration XR tractors with differential steering were manufactured in the USA, with a 7KN prefix, in Japan, with a 7DR prefix, and in France, with a 9MN prefix. Standard configuration, XR tractors with touch control steering were manufactured in the USA, with a 6JN prefix, in Japan, with a 6HR prefix, and in France, with an 8XN prefix.

Standard configuration XL tractors with differential steering were manufactured in the USA, with a 5LN prefix, in Japan, with a 5RR prefix, in France, with a 9BM prefix, and in Brazil, with a 7GR prefix. Standard configuration XL tractors with touch control steering were manufactured in the USA, with a 4MN prefix, in Japan, with a 4WR prefix, in France, with a 4JR prefix, in and Brazil, with a 6MR prefix.

LGP configuration tractors with differential steering were manufactured in the USA, with a 9PN prefix, in Japan, with a 4TR prefix, and in France, with an 8TM prefix. LGP configuration tractors with touch control steering were manufactured in the USA, with an 8LN prefix, in Japan, with a 7AR or 6GR prefix, and in France, with a 4HN prefix.

Production of the Japanese 4TR unit ended in 2003.

The Caterpillar D6R was replaced by the Caterpillar D6R Series II.
