The D9L has a 3412 direct injection turbo 12-cylinder engine producing 460 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with oil-cooled disc clutches and brakes, elevated sprockets, a suspended undercarriage, 98.4 inch track gauge and powershift transmission.
The D9L was manufactured in the USA only, with a 14Y serial number prefix.
In 1982, Caterpillar added a crank driven radiator fan and high engine side guards, beginning with 14Y02009.
In 1984, Caterpillar added hardened steel inserts at the rear and bores in the radiator guard, beginning with 14Y02765.
In 1985, Caterpillar added pressure applied steering clutches and relocated the alternator from the accessory drive in the manhole to the engine compartment, beginning with 14Y03134.
Also in 1985, Caterpillar added heat treated bogies, positive major and minor bogie pin stops, laser welded cartridge pins and introduced new straight (S) and universal (U) dozer blades with more open profile and heel clearance, beginning with 14Y03269.
A certified rebuild was offered for the D9L, beginning with 14Y75000.
Production of the D9L ended in 1986.
The Caterpillar D9L was replaced by the Caterpillar D10N In 1987
Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 4,000 Caterpillar D9L crawler tractors have been produced.
