The Caterpillar D9N crawler tractor was introduced in 1986 as the replacement for the D9L.

The D9N has a 3408 direct injection turbocharged eight-cylinder engine producing 370 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with an elevated sprocket, multiple disc oil-cooled steering clutches and brakes, sealed and lubricated track (SALT), hydraulic system, an 89-inch (226-cm) track gauge, and a three speed forward, three reverse powershift transmission.

It was manufactured in the USA only, with a 1JD serial number prefix.

A certified rebuild was offered on the 1JD, beginning with 1JD75000.

Production of the 1JD ended in 1993.

In 1993, Caterpillar began manufacturing a new D9N, with a 6XJ prefix. Including all the 1JD features, it added a computerized monitoring system and a dual-tilt attachment dozer blade.

Production of the D9N ended in 1995.

The Caterpillar D9N was replaced by the Caterpillar D9R.
