The E70 has a Mitsubishi 4D31 engine producing 52 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with a variable flow hydraulic system, mechanical implement controls, optional off-set boom, and an increased HP travel option.

The E70 was manufactured in Japan, with a 3BG or 3CG serial number prefix.

Production of 3CG ended in 1989; 3BG ended in 1990.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 19,700 Caterpillar E70 midi excavators have been produced.
