The M315 has a Cat 3054 direct injection turbocharged engine producing 116 flywheel horsepower (FWHP).

The M315 was given a 7ML serial number prefix.

Production of M315 ended in 2002; it was replaced by the Caterpillar M315C.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 2,600 Caterpillar M315 mobile excavators have been produced.
