A clamshell bucket
is a two-sided bucket mounted
on heavy equipment, such as a hydraulic excavator
. It is attached by a hangar or bracket and uses specially designed teeth on its cutting edge to dig in a vertical direction.
When the bucket is raised, the two sides close in, producing a movement known as the clamshell grab. When the bucket is lowered, the two sides open and release the materials contained in its grasp.
Manufacturers such as Mack and Atlas produce clamshell buckets for heavy equipment.
