[edit] History
Elecon group was established in 1951 in India as a manufacturer of materials handling equipment for projects based in India. The company initially specialized in equipment such as wagon tipplers, reclaimers, industrial gear boxes, industrial geared motors, and an assortment of electronic equipment.
Eimco launched the Eimco Elecon India Ltd. division on July 31, 1974, with a view of producing specialized underground mining technology and manufacturing a variety of equipment to fill the gap for their India-based mining contractors.
Eimco experienced a change in 1989 when Tamrock OY purchased the Eimco Group. This change meant that the company would refocus on specialized underground mining technology. The acquisition led the way for manufacturing equipment, featuring new technology for rock excavation and surface breaking processes. At the time of the purchase, Tamrock accepted 40 percent of the market share in the mining machinery division of Eimco. Over time, Eimco became one of the top suppliers of drilling and loading equipment for hard rock mining processes.
Eimco’s most popular equipment includes air-powered rocker shovels, electro hydraulic side dump loaders, electro hydraulic and air-powered load haul dumpers; a set of diverse loading equipment specifically designed to meet the needs of underground coal and metalliferous mines.
Eimco’s equipment line eventually came to feature other technologies for underground mining, such as air motors and hydraulic drilling jumbos and roof bolters. To complement this line, Eimco launched the auger-cum-drill and tigger hoists.[2]
Eimco claims to be the first to introduce continuous mining technology, an application made possible with its continuous miners, face roof drills, coal haulers, and several series of LHDs and SDLs. The company also customizes machines for the specific project, allowing for higher bucket capacity as is needed for underground mining projects.
The demands of the mining industry led them to introduce a 6.3-inch (160-mm) and 9.8-inch (250-mm) blasthole drill mounted on a self-propelling crawler. The blasthole drill was specifically designed for open-pit mines as part of Eimco’s plan to expand beyond its previous focus, underground mining.
Some of the introductory equipment manufactured by Eimco resulted from partnerships formed with other companies and research facilities. A prime example of this is the partnership with German researchers to produce an articulated wheel loader, customized to the working conditions of India-based mining applications.[3]
[edit] The Company Today
The company continues to manufacture underground mining equipment. Its major clients span a range of private and public sectors, including: Coal India Vis. Bharat Cooking Coal Ltd., Eastern Coalfield Ltd., Singanery Collieries Co. Ltd., Uranium Corp. of India Bharat Gold Mines, Hindustan Copper Ltd., Hindustan Zinc Ltd., Larsen & Toubro Ltd., and Ferro Alloys Corp. Ltd.[4]
To date, Eimco has produce more than 2,550 machine models that continue to work mining sites throughout the world.
Environtech USA, the parent company of Eimco Group, currently holds 25 percent of Eimco's market shares. Former parent company, Tamrock, is still relevant to the company and provides technical support.
Eimco Elecon India has been experiencing more than a steady growth in its net profit. At the end of 2007, the company recorded a 42.72 percent profit for that quarter.[5]
