Federal Power Commission
From RitchieWiki
The Federal Power Commission is a former independent agency of the United States government. It was responsible for the electric and natural gas industries.
It was created by the Federal Water Power Act of 1920, although originally its power was restricted to licensing hydroelectric projects. Its responsibilities increased when the U.S. president and Senate reorganized it in 1930. The Federal Power Commission became a group of five appointed full-time members with authority over electric power and natural gas.
As time went by, the Commission’s power and responsibilities broadened eventually including authority over the transportation and sale of electric power and natural gas, construction of interstate natural gas pipelines, as well as power to regulate securities, mergers, acquisitions, and accounts of electric utilities. It also became involved in environmental issues and how they were affected by both electric power and natural gas.
The Federal Power Commission was abolished in 1978, with all its responsibilities being taken over by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
